Data and sources

Everything on this site comes from published public data. This page lists every dataset, its publisher and licence, what we do with it, and — for the census figures — the exact areas behind each number, so you can reproduce our arithmetic rather than take it on trust.

Licences and attribution

Each licence below governs the source dataset, not this site. Our own pages are not licensed by the Town of Oakville, Statistics Canada or the Province — claiming they were would be a false statement about our compilation.

Where a publisher documents no licence, we say so rather than guess one. That is the case for the Ministry of Education school directory and the EQAO results: both are credited in full, and neither is presented as carrying a licence we cannot point to.

How we define our areas

Our neighbourhood areas are SouthOakville.ca's own editorial coverage areas, not Town of Oakville boundaries. The Town does not publish official neighbourhood boundaries.

The Town’s only neighbourhood zone layer states that it is “derived from the Transportation Master Plan and are intended for internal use only” and that the zones “do not represent official or publicly recognized neighbourhood boundaries and should not be used for general or external purposes.” We do not use it, and nothing on this site is derived from it.

Instead, our method is:

  1. The coverage line is the QEW. Its alignment comes from the Town’s own road centreline data — the geometry of its QEW interchanges, exits 109 to 124. We validate that line against ten known landmarks on both sides before using it, in an automated test that fails the build if any of them lands on the wrong side.
  2. Areas are cut at named features — Bronte Creek, Third Line, Dorval Drive, Sixteen Mile Creek, Morrison Road, Ford Drive — projected onto an axis parallel to the shoreline, because Oakville’s street grid is rotated roughly 30° from north and a simple north–south split does not follow it.
  3. Membership is expressed as census areas. Each area is the set of Statistics Canada 2021 dissemination areas whose centre falls inside it — 114 in total. Those lists are published below. Every population and percentage on this site is aggregated from them, with averages weighted by population.

Read the full explanation of the coverage definition, including the one context in which the Town does use the name “South Oakville”.

Census areas behind each neighbourhood

What we deliberately do not publish

This site carries no real-estate data of any kind, and that is a hard rule rather than a current gap. Nothing derived from MLS, IDX, VOW or PropTx data reaches these pages: no listings, no prices, no sold or leased figures, no days on market, no inventory counts, no neighbourhood or catchment medians, and no statistic whose inputs include any of those.

The export that builds this site is an explicit allowlist. Every published field is named individually in the pipeline before it can appear; upstream records are never copied whole and filtered afterwards. An automated test fails the build if a prohibited field name or a listing-derived value appears anywhere in the published data.

We also publish no school catchment boundaries, no school rankings or composite scores, and no “best of” lists. Catchments change and belong to the school boards; rankings would require a methodology we do not have.

Known data-quality issues

Public datasets contain errors. Where we find one, we say so here rather than quietly correcting it — a correction we invent is worse than a gap we disclose.

Coordinates outside the municipal boundary. 1 of the 21 school records carries a published coordinate that falls outside the Town of Oakville. We publish the record with its address and omit the map position, rather than dropping a real school or substituting a geocode of our own.

  • Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School (255 Morden Road)coordinate outside the Town of Oakville boundary.

Every school coordinate is checked against the Town of Oakville boundary at build time, and a new record that fails breaks the build rather than shipping silently.
